How much does it cost to accept credit cards?

Pricing varies from client to client. The fees you will see are based on three items:

  • Interchange - For every credit/debit card that exists, there is a pre-set rate that the MSP pays to the issuing bank.

  • Dues and Assessments - paid directly to the Card Associations for the use of the card brand, and the ability to process credit and debit card transactions of the Visa, MasterCard, and Discover payment networks.

  • Mark up - an additional fee that is paid to the credit card processor.

Can you explain EMV?

EMV, which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa - is a global standard for credit cards that uses computer chips to authenticate chip-card transactions, to reduce fraud.

How do I start accepting chip cards?

To accept EMV at your business, you’ll need a new, EMV-enabled credit card reader. EMV transactions are inserted vertically instead of swiped horizontally.

Who is liable for non-EMV transactions?

As of October 2015, if someone pays with a fraudulent chip card, and you’re not set up with an EMV card reader, it's possible that the banks are no longer liable. For example, if a fraudster buys $100 worth of merchandise with a counterfeit EMV chip card, and the business doesn’t have a chip card reader to process the transaction, the business could be liable for the $100.
